Air Frame is a flat-packed self assembly range of furniture designed for Cassina IXC Ltd. The material itself, a strong but lightweight honeycomb structure sandwiched between two anodised aluminium sheets, was the starting point of the project. In designing the pieces, the challenge was to find ways of modifying the material so as to make it suitable, both structurally and aesthetically, for use as a table, chair or desk. The solution was to devise a concealed fixing to enable the aluminium panels to form a stable structure. In the tradition of the Modern movement, particularly those designs of Marcel Breuer, Eileen Gray and Mies van der Rohe, the Air Frame range is an attempt to win back the simplicity of both design and construction.
