Thomas Benk is an Associate at David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, where he specialises in complex heritage projects that require a sensitive and informed approach to existing structures. He was responsible for several high-profile heritage projects as Project Lead, including the restoration of the Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten in Frankfurt am Main as well as Rockbund in Shanghai and played an important role in the design development and delivery of projects such as the refurbishment of the Bötzow Brewery in Berlin, West Bund Museum in Shanghai and the Procuratie Vecchie in Venice. On joining the office in 2003, Thomas was initially responsible for the structural interventions within the historic fabric of the Neues Museum.

He brings a deep understanding of historic preservation, shaped by his previous involvement in the restoration of numerous heritage sites in Hamburg and his background as a trained stonemason and sculptor. In addition to his work in historic preservation, Thomas brings specific expertise in sustainable and circular construction, with a particular focus on the reuse of building materials. He studied architecture at the Fachhochschule Hamburg.
