Thomas Benk initially trained as a stonemason and sculptor. Following his education in architecture at the Fachhochschule Hamburg, Thomas was involved in the restoration of numerous heritage projects in Hamburg over many years. He joined David Chipperfield Architects Berlin in 2003. Within the project Neues Museum, Thomas was responsible as team leader for the shell work in the existing structure as well as the site design supervision. The focus of Thomas’ work is in leading heritage projects, construction work in existing buildings and site design supervision. As project architect, he has been responsible for a wide range of projects, including Rockbund Project & Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai, the restoration of the Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten in Frankfurt am Main as well as the restoration of Hotel Ortaköy in Istanbul. He supported the site design supervision of the West Bund Museum in Shanghai and is responsible for the planning and quality management for the refurbishment of the Bötzow Brewery in Berlin. Thomas became an associate at David Chipperfield Architects Berlin in 2017.
