The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has awarded Selfridges Duke Street and Hoxton Press, Colville Estate, London Regional Awards at a ceremony on Monday. The Selfridges project comprises a new entrance building, linking the department store’s two historic buildings on the east side, and creating a new 5,000m2 continuous floor space internally. The interior combines Selfridges’ history with contemporary retail design providing a visual identity for the store’s accessories hall, as well as improved circulation and amenities.
Hoxton Press, two brick-clad residential towers in Shoreditch, won the award as part of the Colville Estate masterplan, which was designed by Karakusevic Carson Architects. The masterplan is the result of a collaborative process involving the council, local community, developer and architects, and demonstrates how local authorities can positively channel investment to ensure that housing provision is considered within the wider ideas of community and urbanity.
