Residential building Killesberg

A new urban district in Stuttgart is situated on the Killesberg hill at the former location of the city’s trade fair grounds. The site is in the immediate vicinity of both the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design as well as the Weissenhof Estate and was developed on the basis of a masterplan drawn up by Ortner & Ortner. The new district comprises primarily residential accommodation as well as offices, retail and gastronomy.

Alongside buildings by Ortner & Ortner, Kees Christiaanse and Baumschlager Eberle, the apartment building designed by David Chipperfield Architects forms the northern boundary of the district’s square. The free-standing volume has six residential floors with a lower ground floor level and a two-storey childcare centre. The floor plans of the 18 apartments vary and all apartments have room-height glazing. Loggias, which are cut deep into the west façade, face the park and provide distant views over the Killesberg hill. A spacious apartment is situated in the uppermost storey with a loggia opening up to the sky. The roof of the building features a swimming pool. The childcare centre can be accessed from the new district square. Carved out terraces function as protected outdoor spaces and extend the childcare centre’s play areas.

Light-coloured brick with a lime mortar slurry finish was used for the building. The façade material represents a unifying design element, giving the residential building and childcare facility a homogenous yet lively texture. The floor slabs are discernible externally as concrete consoles, articulating the façades.
