Following commissions of Ninetree Village and Liangzhu Museum in Hangzhou, David Chipperfield Architects Shanghai was founded in 2005, initially as a representative office for Berlin, then an independent office in 2014. Rooted in China for over 20 years, the office has a comprehensive understanding of the contextual conditions shared and differed from the west, in regard of the opportunities and constraints to achieve our ambitions. Reputation is gained through extensive practice of working in Shanghai’s former European concessions, for reuse of historic buildings and regeneration of historic communities. The office has a compact size of 30 staff, and its horizontal structure allows free communication and efficient collaboration.
