In 2022, David Chipperfield Architects established an office in Santiago de Compostela to support the work of the non-profit initiative Fundación RIA in the Spanish region of Galicia. The office was responsible for the restoration of a historic nineteenth-century building in Virxe da Cerca 6 that now houses Casa RIA, a space dedicated to research and dialogue on sustainable development, urban planning and cultural conservation.
The ground floor and the garden, with privileged views of Belvís Park, serve to host a public programme of events, conferences, lectures and exhibitions to promote and support the foundation’s work.
A Cantina is the dining room and gastronomic research space that accompanies Casa RIA's public programme, educating on the central role that food plays in the sustainable development in the region. It is a meeting point for neighbours, students, researchers and business partners and brings a vibrant atmosphere to everyday office life
The team is currently working on architectural and urban planning projects internationally, drawing on the principles of sustainability advocated by Fundación RIA to inform its work.
