The Central Archaeological Council and the Central Council of Modern Monuments, advisory bodies of the Ministry of Culture of Greece, have unanimously approved the proposed studies for the expansion and upgrade of the Hellenic National Archaeological Museum

Following an international competition won in 2023, the project comprises a major extension and refurbishment, responding to the museum’s need for increased exhibition space and an expanded programme, while meeting contemporary international standards for sustainability and museum design.

"The expansion and upgrade of the National Archaeological Museum, through the proposed interventions, will give the monument a unified and coherent character by removing the irregularities and disjointed additions made over time to the complex building. It will restore elements of the original structure and improve its functionality to satisfy the requirements of a modern museum of global significance." – Lina Mendoni, Minister of Culture of Greece
