David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, in collaboration with the Institute for Computational Design and Construction at the University of Stuttgart, explored innovative ways to reuse rubble through the integration of material, techniques, and digital technologies. The project, funded by Zukunft Bau, reimagines how construction and demolition waste can be relevant in modern architecture.
While rubble recycling is common, it is often used for low-grade purposes like backfilling. Historically, rubble has played a key role in architecture, but modern processes and cost have made it less viable. Rubble Works explores how advances in digital technologies, combined with robotic workflows, can unlock rubble’s potential, offering a new perspective on its use in contemporary design.
