The refurbishment of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin is the subject of the latest episode of the Sky Arts series The Art of Architecture (Season 3: Episode 9) which aired on 6 June. Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie is one of the most iconic buildings of the twentieth century and originally opened in 1968. In 2012 David Chipperfield Architects was appointed to refurbish the building, which re-opened in 2021. The programme examines the historic significance of the Neue Nationalgalerie and the painstaking process of its refurbishment which involved stripping the building back to its frame in order to preserve and restore its components before reinstalling them in their precise original positions.
