28.05.2020SSENSE Montreal wins two ACI Awards

The Quebec and Eastern Ontario chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), has announced the winners of the inaugural Concrete Construction Excellence Awards. From 28 selected projects, the SSENSE Montreal boutique project developed by David Chipperfield Architects Milan received two prizes. The first award was in the Exposed or Decorative Concrete category while the second was the overall Architectural Merit Award. The ACI Awards celebrate the quality, diversity and beauty of concrete construction in Quebec and Eastern Ontario.

The SSENSE project, which opened in 2018, involved the renovation of a derelict mid-nineteenth century building on the Rue Saint-Sulpice in Vieux-Montréal, the oldest district in Montreal. The historic brick and stone façades were preserved and restored while a new five-storey building, made entirely of black sandblasted concrete, cast in-situ, was inserted within.
