David Chipperfield Architects has been appointed to renovate the former Soviet telecommunications headquarters following an international selection process. The listed, purpose-built Central Telegraph building was completed in 1927 after a design by Ivan Rerberg. It is located in a prominent historic neighbourhood in central Moscow, close to Red Square and the Kremlin. More recently the building was converted into office space and subsequently lost its role in the life of the city. The project will see the careful restoration of the building, while equipping it to modern standards. It will be sensitively opened to the public allowing the building to become an active part of the city of Moscow once again.
