Over the last several months, David Chipperfield Architects Berlin has been taking part in a community engagement process exploring the opportunities and challenges of building Berlin’s new central library in the city’s Kreuzberg district. On 17 January the results of this process were presented to the public.

The office teamed up with city planners Urban Catalyst and traffic planners LK Argus to lead discussions with interested citizens to develop a feasibility study for the development of the site which includes the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (American Memorial Library). Particular attention was paid to dealing with this listed building, the urban park and the complex traffic situation. The insights gained during the process will form the basis of further planning and an architectural competition to follow.
