The Barbanza Ecosocial Lab was formed earlier this year to research and promote environmental, social and economic sustainability in the Barbanza peninsula in Galicia. The project is an initiative of the Fundación RIA, which was set up by David Chipperfield in 2016, together with the HISTAGRA research group at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. It was made possible thanks to the collaboration between Fundación RIA and Fundación Banco Santander, which is funding the project.

The project has now launched its online platform to present its research and field studies carried out from January. The interactive website, barbanzaecosocial.org, is a platform for meeting, knowledge-sharing and information, and is available in Galician, Spanish and English. Through engaging graphics, maps, videos and articles, online visitors can access the work, the people and the stories around the project and its research on sustainable development in the Galician peninsula.

Since 2004, the Fundación Banco Santander has maintained a programme for the recovery of threatened species and degraded natural areas in cooperation with leading specialised institutions. Laboratorio Ecosocial do Barbanza also counts on the support from the Cátedra Juana de Vega.
