An exhibition on the Sanatorium Dr. Barner titled Architecture is Medicine has opened at the Chamber of Architects of Lower Saxony in Hanover following the project’s win at the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award 2018 in the conservation category.
The exhibition will run until 31 October and will be subsequently on display at the permanent federal representations of Lower Saxony in Brussels and Berlin. A series of lectures on various aspects of the sanatorium’s refurbishment will accompany the exhibition.
Sanatorium Dr. Barner, a specialist clinic for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, is considered one of the most significant preserved Art Nouveau buildings in Germany and documents with its unique integrity 100 years of sanatorium culture and the history of medicine. The masterplan for the restoration of the sanatorium was undertaken by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin in partnership with the Monument Authority of Lower Saxony and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim.
