Docomomo Germany’s 16th annual conference took place in Berlin 1 March. The 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus was taken as an opportunity to discuss the significance of modernity in the twenty first century. As part of the programme David Chipperfield presented the practice’s work on Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The museum, which first opened in 1968, has been painstakingly stripped back down to its frame, in order to preserve and restore its original features while updating its facilities to contemporary standards. The €100 million project is due to be completed in 2020.
The International committee for documentation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the modern movement, (docomomo) is a non-profit organisation that aims to protect and promote modernist buildings.
