The building, which opened to the public in mid-July, has received a commendation from the Deutsche Architekturpreis / German State Award for Architecture in a ceremony held in the Berlin State Library 26 September.
In its statement, the jury recognised “the impressiveness of both the simple and functional as well as noble and elegant appearance of the building that inserts itself into Schinkel’s city of ‘solitary structures’ with a contemporary attitude that is both conscious of itself and its tradition”.
The Deutsche Architekturpreis is awarded every two years by the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) and the German Federal Chamber of Architects. In 2011, the practice won this award for the Neues Museum.
