The first international outpost of the Berlin-based BASTIAN gallery has opened in London’s Mayfair. The gallery is dedicated to showing modern and contemporary art and opens with an exhibition of Andy Warhol’s polaroid pictures, on display 2 February – 13 April.
The gallery occupies a purpose-built retail unit on the ground and basement floors of a twentieth century mansion block. The spaces were refurbished and converted into offices, an exhibition space and a private showroom providing a clean and ambient space to display a variety of artworks. Limestone flooring covers both floors and a new staircase which has a marble inlay.
David Chipperfield Architects previously designed BASTIAN’s Berlin gallery on Am Kupfergraben in Berlin, facing Museum Island, which opened in 2007.
