Jay Merrick has written an article in the June issue of Icon magazine about an urban research project conducted by David Chipperfield and Swiss architect Simon Kretz. For 18 months the two architects, brought together by the Rolex Mentor & Protégé programme, explored the urban forces that shape our cities. The Bishopsgate Goodsyard site in East London was used as test-bed for new ideas, to show how urban regeneration projects can look beyond their immediate boundary lines. Working closely with students at ETH Zurich they developed alternative proposals for the site.
These ideas, as well as the proposals, were brought together in a recently published book: On Planning – A Thought Experiment, which will be presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale in May.
