On 22 June a ceremony was held at the Berlin Congress Center honouring the winners of the 2018 EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards. Among the winners, in the conservation category, is Sanatorium Dr. Barner, considered one of the most significant Art Nouveau buildings in Germany. The project was also one of seven Grand Prix laureates, selected from the 29 prize winners. The masterplan for the restoration of the sanatorium was undertaken by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin in partnership with the Monument Authority of Lower Saxony (Niedersächsisches Amt für Denkmalpflege) and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim.
The ceremony was co-hosted by Plácido Domingo, musical maestro and President of Europa Nostra, and Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport. German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also attended, along with other high-level EU officials and representatives of heritage organisations.
Europa Nostra is playing an active role in the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, which aims to raise awareness of shared cultural heritage with a programme of events across Europe. David Chipperfield is an ambassador for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.
