Around 1,200 guests attended a lavish party at the Empire Riverside Hotel in Hamburg last week as the building, designed by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, celebrated its tenth anniversary. The 22-storey, 328-room hotel was the practice’s first major Hamburg project and is located in the St Pauli district, overlooking the River Elbe. Last year the Waterkant restaurant, situated on the first floor of the hotel, was redesigned by DCAB in celebration of the upcoming anniversary. The party – hosted by Andreas and Patrick Fraatz, the grandchildren of hotel founder Willi Bartels – saw acrobats and musicians perform within the hotel’s four-storey atrium space.
The ceremony comes only days after DCAB was announced as the winner of the Elbtower competition to design a further high-rise building in the city, to be located four kilometres upstream from the Empire Riverside Hotel.
