Following a two-stage competitive bidding procedure, David Chipperfield Architects Berlin has been appointed to refurbish and transform the main building of the former Central Customs Office in Munich. The representative Jugendstil building was originally built in 1912 for the Royal Bavarian custom authorities. It was one of the first buildings of its size to be built using a reinforced concrete frame construction and houses generous daylight-filled spaces. A 45-metre-high glass dome is one of the distinctive features of the building. The listed building is to be transformed into a modern centre for departments of the Federal Customs Administration, accommodating offices, storage spaces, workshops and public functions.
