The Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin has been closed since the beginning of the year for refurbishment. Almost 50 years after being built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe between 1965-68, the museum is undergoing extensive restoration for the first time. Following several months of preparation, all exhibits are now being moved out in order for the refurbishment to begin.
The four-year refurbishment project includes fire-prevention measures, renovation of the entire exterior, removal of the root cause of glass breakage, an overhaul of the concrete shell and the renewal of building services. The building must also meet the requirements of a modern museum in terms of air conditioning, safety, lighting, storage functions and visitor services.
